Help With Pictures

Uploading Pictures

All registered users may upload pictures. Pictures are organized into galleries. Galleries enable you to group your photos by subject, project, manufacturer, etc. You must create a gallery before uploading your first picture. To add a gallery, click Add Photo Gallery from the Photo menu.

Any size picture may be uploaded, however, pictures larger than 500 pixels wide will be automatically resized. This is done to save server space, and to keep other users from having to scroll far to the right. The auto resize may impact the quality of the picture, as the resize algorithm is not as sophisticated as a graphics program. To maintain best quality, resize pictures before uploading.

The host of this site does not like long processes. If you are trying to upload a massive picture which takes 20 seconds or more, it may time out. That is because of the large size (and resultant need to resize), but also varies based on the speed of your connection. If the picture is so large that it times out on upload, it's likely the result of the resize would be unacceptable, and you should resize the picture before trying again.

Adding Pictures to Posts - Internet Explorer

Adding pictures to posts is pretty easy, especially if the picture is already on the internet. If it isn't, you'll have to upload it here or somewhere else.

When starting a new post, you may add a picture like this: First, find the picture on this site, or on the Internet, and right click on it to get the menu -- then select copy:

Next, right click into the editor window, and paste the picture in:

You may be given a warning that the site is trying to access your clipboard. This depends on the security settings you have set in your browser. If you get the error, click ok once or twice to allow the picture to paste. Once the picture is pasted, it's a good idea to check the size and other options. Right click the picture and select "Image Properties":

You will be shown the picture properties:

Here you can adjust the size of the picture, plus alignment and spacing. The picture should not be more than 200-300 pixels wide if you want the text to flow around it. If the picture is wider than 600 pixels, the formatting of the site will chop it at that width, and it will not look right. Please, set the width appropriately. Align refers to where you want the picture on the page -- left, right, etc. Hspace and Vspace determine how much space to put around the picture so that text does not come right to the edge. 5-10 pixels is a good number. You can add a border.

If you want the picture to be clickable (linked), click the Image Properties Link Tab to diplay the following dialog:

Make sure the URL field has the URL of the picture in it. When you're done, click OK to close the properties window and finish typing your post.

Adding Pictures to Posts - Firefox

Firefox does not seem to allow direct access to the Clipboard like Internet Explorer does. Therefore, we must find the URL of image, and cut and paste that into the post using the image button.

First, find the image you want to insert into your post. Right-click the image and select Copy Image Location:

Next, click the Image icon in the editor window:

Paste the image location into the URL section:
